<\/p>\nIf you have rows of data in an Excel spreadsheet it can sometimes be handy to highlight the row based on the value in one of the cells in that row. In the example below, when I put an x in the Paid column, I want the row to be highlighted.

You can do this with Conditional Formatting:
\n1. Select the block of cells. In the example above I selected seven rows and four columns of data.
\n2. On the Home tab in the Styles group, select Conditional Formatting
\n3. Select New Rule
\n4. In the Select a Type of Rule list, select Use formula to determine which cells to format
\n5. In Format values where this formula is true box, enter =
\n6. Click on the cell in the Paid column for the first row of data
\n7. Delete the second $ in the cell address so $D$2 becomes $D2
\n8. Complete the formula: = $D2 = “x”
\n9. Click on the Format button and choose the formatting you want applied

\n10. Click on OK twice<\/p>\n
Notes:
\n\u2022 Conditional Formatting applies formatting when the formula returns a TRUE result. You might want to experiment with the formula you are going to use before you create a rule. This will be useful in getting the logic and syntax of the formula correct before you dive into conditional formatting. So, in the example above I clicked in a column to the right of Paid and created the formula I wanted to use. = D2 = “x”
\n\u2022 If you are going to use text in a formula you need to put it in ” ” otherwise you\u2019ll get a #NAME error
