An alternative way to add comments to a cell

You have likely discovered Comments in Excel which are useful if you want to capture some thought about the value in a cell.  (Right-click on the cell, Insert Comment)

As an alternative to Comments, I sometimes use the N function.  The N function lets you add comments that are displayed in Formula Bar.  So when I click on a cell and look at the Formula Bar, I see the calculation and my notes next to it.

If you want to use the N function, just type it as shown with ” around the text.

You can use the N function anywhere in a calculation, just put a + either side of it.  So your formula could look like this: =22*3.25  + N(“increased quantity to 22”)  + 5.5*6
